FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Alpha Kappa Psi?
AKPsi is the oldest, most prestigious, principled co-ed business organization in the country. Alpha Kappa Psi is recognized as the premier developer of principled business leaders, and for the past 100 years we have done just that. Our Alumni list boasts easily recognizable business and political leaders such as Ronald Reagan, J.W. Marriott, Steve Forbes, Lee Iacocca, J.C. Penny, Sam Walton and many more.
Are all members called Brothers? Or do the women get called something else?
Men and women are all called Brothers. Women were first admitted into Alpha Kappa Psi in 1976. We make no distinctions between members based on gender, race, etc. Each member has equal rights and privileges and the word “brother” transcends its gender implications by representing and standing for kinship, fraternal loyalty, and friendship.
Why should I join AKPsi?
AKPsi isn’t something you do in college to add to your résumé. What we offer is an experience that you can’t get any other way. AKPsi offers a brotherhood that lasts a lifetime, memories to cherish, an edge above your peers, and networking that is unsurpassed. Alpha Kappa Psi is a fraternity for life.
What exactly do you do in the fraternity?
Alpha Kappa Psi creates opportunities to learn leadership, professionalism, networking, social skills, and organizational skills. These opportunities are in the form of workshops for members, elected and appointed officer positions, speakers, regional and national programs and conventions, and much more!
Is it all business?
No. We work hard and like to have fun while we work and after we work. Since the chapter is so diverse, we have anything from going to Braves games to themed parties. We also have a Formal in the Spring. These activities are bonding experiences. And bonding is a big part of making friends and creating a stronger more successful team.
Do I have to be a business major?
No, AKPsi is open to any student with an interest in business whether or not you’re majoring in it.
What are the requirements to join?
Students who wish to join AKPsi must be enrolled full time and be in good standing at Auburn. You must also have at least a 2.5 GPA.
I am a freshman or a transfer student and don’t have a GPA. Can I still apply?
Yes. If you are a first year freshman you can provide your high school GPA. If you are a transfer student, you may provide your former school GPA.
I’m not a freshman, can I still join?
Yes, as long as you still have two full semesters before you graduate.
What happens after I apply?
The application is to enter a pledge program. The pledge program is an opportunity for you to see if Alpha Kappa Psi is right for you. And it is an opportunity for us to evaluate if you have what it takes to be a brother of Alpha Kappa Psi.
Does that mean if you don’t like me, I won’t get in?
Unlike many Greek organizations, we base our judgment on merit. We evaluate pledges much like an employer of a company. We are looking for dedicated, hard working, goal oriented, enthusiastic men and women who have time and work well with others.
Is there a pledge season?
Yes. If invited to join our fraternity, you, along with your pledge brothers, will have to complete a series of events and tasks that are designed to foster a better understanding about the Fraternity, Brotherhood, and Professional Development. Among the tasks required are hosting a service, fundraising, and social event; learning about the history of Alpha Kappa Psi and the Mu Omega Chapter; meeting and bonding with your pledge brothers, and all of the current Brothers in the fraternity.
I go to school fulltime, work fulltime, and have family and personal commitments. I don’t know if I have the time. Are you flexible?
We understand. We are all students ourselves who have full lives. We recognize it is a great investment of your time as it is ours. The program is designed to be manageable so as to meet our schedules as well as yours. We wouldn’t ask anyone to do anything we wouldn’t do. The pledge program is only difficult if you don’t budget your time wisely. We say it’s like taking another class; you should expect to spend the amount of time during a week in the pledge process that you would in a class. Once you become a brother you will be involved in planning activities, attending professional, social, and service events, as well as weekly meetings. So although we are accommodating, we do need members who have time to contribute to the fraternity’s growth, which in turn results in greater benefits and opportunities for you.
Do you haze?
No. All pledge and brother activities are designed to build teamwork, trust, professional development, brotherhood, and most importantly, to make sure you have and know what is necessary to be a good brother.
I am already a member of another fraternity/sorority. Can I still join?
Yes!
